Survey Results Overview

The "50 States Survey," a comprehensive study of the status of environmental education programs in the 50 states. Find results and detailed summaries of the survey findings for each state.

The collection of 50 PDF documents that can be viewed here are the Results of the Third Survey on the Status of Environmental Education Programs at the State-Level. The survey was conducted in late 2004-early 2005 by Abby Ruskey and Richard Wilke, then co-directors of the National Environmental Education Advancement Project (NEEAP), and was sponsored by the Environmental Education and Training Partnership (EETAP). Respondents included environmental education liaisons from state EE associations, EE specialists in state agencies, state coordinators of national EE curriculum and training programs, and other key EE leaders identified by state.

State-by-State Reports

Initial results were presented at the 2005 NAAEE conference and are available here on the NAAEE Web site along with links to related articles. These state-by-state reports are provided by EETAP and NAAEE for state environmental education leaders, stakeholders, and other interested parties for planning, promotional, and other uses. The results are provided within the following sections for each state report.

  1. Components of Comprehensive EE Programs
  2. Legislation and Timelines Documenting State EE Programs
  3. State EE Associations

For some of the components, more specific data was requested from EE leaders. If provided, the information is listed in the column titled “Sub Item.” For all of the components, respondents were asked to provide evidence of the component. The “Artifacts” column provides information about the component that may help the reader track down a Web site, document, organization, or person related to that particular environmental education initiative.

Additional Capacity Building Resources on the Web

In addition to the state reports, a wealth references to specific resources were collected during the survey. In particular, survey respondents reported state progress in 31 component areas. This web site collection of these references can be seen here:

The EE-Link Capacity Building pages provide information categorized into four main topic areas including:

Data from Previous Years Available

In addition to the results provided here for 2004-2005, previous state-by-state data from 1995 and 1998 surveys and other information about this project can be obtained from Abby Ruskey at aruskey@eeaw.org.
