Geography, Skill Sets, Characteristics of Board Nominees

Geography will play a role in candidates selected, as well as particular characteristics, professions, skill-sets, and interests. Map of current Board is linked at bottom of page.

To reflect the distribution of our members, nominees for the Board on the 2008 Ballot need to be from the following geographic areas:

  • New England
  • Mid-Atlantic
  • Upper Mid-West
  • South-Central U.S.
  • Canada
  • Mexico

In addition, nominees need to be from government agencies (local, state, federal), from nonformal/informal education institutions, and from formal education (either K-12 schools, teacher-preparation institutions, or environmental educators who work primarily or exclusively with K-12 teachers & students) and must include people of color. As of 2009 the Board will include no one from Canada, so one of the new Board Members needs to be from Canada.

Skill-sets and characteristics of special interest include:

  • Experience raising funds from corporations, foundations, membership recruitment, individual donations, and/or earned income sources. Experience in this area is expected, but may be outweighed by exceptional strength in other areas of importance.
  • Working closely with any of the issues about which the Board will be expected to make decisions (e.g., K-12 education & teacher preparation/certification/NCATE; education about contemporary issues such as climate change, environmental justice, energy security, urban health, kids-in-the-woods, sustainable development).

All nominees and all Board members should have the following:

  • Willingness to advocate for EE and represent the Association to potential new members, donors, sponsors, and Affiliates.
  • Ability to mentor new committee chairs and build their leadership skills.
  • Understanding of financial reports and sound fiscal management.
  • A vision of and excitement about the direction in which our Association can and should lead the field.
