Sustainability Education Commission

The Commission’s initial challenge is to help explain sustainability, still relatively new to some. A key forum for this effort is the Commission’s sustainability strand, workshop, and symposium at NAAEE’s annual conference, which spread the concept that one’s everyday actions create a lifestyle that can produce a more healthy, habitable, and equitable world for all beings.

Description

The Sustainability Education Commission (SEC) provides a forum for discussion and professional development for NAAEE members who are interested in educating for a more sustainable future. The SEC is NAAEE’s newest commission and has more than 100 members.

Mission

To work to further the field of environmental education through the theme of educating for a more sustainable future.

Purpose

The purposes of the SEC are to:

  • Provide a forum for professional discourse on sustainability education and contribute to the growing body of sustainability education knowledge and research.
  • Offer professional development and resources for educators related to sustainability education, including workshops and a clearinghouse for sustainability education materials.
  • Promote sustainability as both an operational and content priority at annual NAAEE conferences.
  • Serve as a liaison to other sustainability education and sustainable development stakeholders, including the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.

The SEC is one of NAAEE’s contribution to the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development.

Accomplishments

During the past year, the SEC went from an ad hoc commission to a full commission. To do this the members drafted and approved a charter. The commission called for nominations for Chair Elect and held its first election in Fall 2006.

The SEC helped organize the sustainability strand for the 2006 NAAEE conference. A committee of the SEC proposed pre-conference workshops, symposiums, and a field trips for the 2006 conference.
