Wednesday, November 14 All-Day Workshops (08:30 – 5:00)

1.       Downsview Park: Modern Living in a Modern World Learn more about the outdoor education experiences that can be created through the reinvention of “a unique urban recreational greenspace for the enjoyment of future generations" on a self-financing basis such as Downsview Park. Create the rural affect in an urban setting through the development of strategies and opportunities that will produce wonderful learning venues for students to learn about the environment right in their backyard. $45 Lead by: Tony Genco from Downsview Park Inc.

2.       Wetland Outdoor Classroom: The Planning of Wetlands 11-Steps to Success Using a local schoolyard as field site, learn how to design a wetland outdoor classroom. The information is sophisticated enough to challenge the most advanced high school students and also basic enough to involve elementary grade school students. $85 Lead by: Sarah Toman from Environmental Concern, Inc.

3.       Going Wild in the City: Discovering the Urban Ecosystem Join Smithsonian's National Zoo and the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center staff to learn about the theories and practices behind urban nature education.  Through classroom and field training, you will develop skills to implement a hands-on nature education program in various urban settings. $75 Lead by: Debbi Hanibal from Smithsonian's National Zoological Park

4.       Bridging Conservation and Communities: A Conservation Education Toolkit   A toolkit and a practical exploration of case studies from a diversity of organizations and agencies will prepare participants for use of environmental education as a tool to reach conservation goals and provide strategies to better serve their own communities. $100 Lead by: Aaron Morehouse from Catalina Island Conservancy

5.       Music - Build It and They Will Come Build and play a dulcimer that you construct during the workshop.  This is an environmental education experience that includes social studies, physics, music, art, language arts.  Learn how music is an excellent connector to all subjects and how true "folk music” can be a barometer of our interaction with one another and our environment. $65 Lead by: John Shortt and Joe Lombardi

6.       ***CANCELLED*** Using the Environmental Impact Module as a Case Study for Environmental Justice Certified Trainers will train you on how  to use SEPUP's Guided Inquiry and acclaimed rubric based assessment to challenge and enhance your middle and high school students' learning. You’ll role play a real life scenario in which you are a resident of an island asked to vote to allow a factory to be built.  The fee allows for one or more participants from your school or center to attend.  You will engage in science applications needed to analyze how industries obtain raw materials, manufacture a product, and dispose of waste safely. 7.       Evaluating your Education Program: A Practical Approach for EE Practitioners Evaluation is essential to improving and justifying programs and promoting excellence in EE.  In this entry-level, skill-building workshop, you'll learn how to use a logic model as an evaluation framework, how to focus your evaluation efforts through an evaluation planning matrix, and build skills for carrying out the evaluation process.  Participants will receive a draft of the new NAAEE publication on EE Program Evaluation. $85 Lead by Julie Ernst from U of Minnesota at Duluth and Trina Hofreiter from The Urban Ecology Institute

8.       Service Learning 101 - Environmental Education in the Community Service-learning is an ideal approach to teaching for environmental educators. Explore the basics - what it is (and isn't), why it's important, and how to do it well - all viewed through the prism of environmental and community character education. $50 Lead by Sandra Ryack-Bell from The Dunn Foundation & Jerry Pharr from Earth Force

9.       Environmental Education - Guidelines for Excellence This hands-on workshop introduces participants to the National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education series. Through guided exercises, participants learn how to use all five publications as tools for developing and implementing comprehensive, cohesive EE programs. Each participant will receive a copy of Nonformal Environmental Education Programs -Guidelines for Excellence, Environmental Education Materials: Guidelines for Excellence, Excellence in Environmental Education - Guidelines for Learning (PreK-12), and Guidelines for the Initial Preparation and Professional Development of Environmental Educators. $45 Lead by Ed McCrea (NY), Susan Sahnow (OR), and Lisa Herrman (AZ)

10.    NAAEE Resource Reviews: Take the Plunge! How do your programs and materials fare against the Guidelines for Excellence? Assess your resources and find out. Learn about NAAEE's Resource Reviews program and work on your online self-review. Submit resources for peer review and gain valuable feedback. 11.    ***CANCELLED*** Learning Ocean Science Through Ocean Exploration Participate in inquiry- and standards-based activities tied directly to ocean expeditions to bring the excitement of current deep-sea ocean science discoveries to your grade 6-12 students using the NOAA Ocean Exploration curriculum and the Ocean Explorer Web site (www.oceanexplorer.noaa.gov).  Receive a copy of the curriculum and CD-ROMs. $45.00 Lead by Cindy Renkas from NOAA Ocean Exploration Program

12.    Co-Creating the Story of the Emerging Culture of Sustainability Join a naturalist, a business consultant and a designer in experientially learning the Three Hats method and the ReSourcing Model that you can apply in your programs to help co-create the story of our emerging culture of sustainability. $130 Lead by Jack Greene from Bioneers

13.    ***CANCELLED*** The Environment and the Impact of Paper and Print This workshop will discuss the key issues which will relate the choice of paper and print used in schools and colleges, to environmental change.  The workshop will focus on forestry management and its crucial importance to global warming. $45 Lead by Derek Smith from Derek Smith and Associates

14.    A New Way of Thinking:  An Introduction to Education for Sustainability (EfS) The significant problems we face today cannot be solved with the same thinking used to create them.  We will explore activities combining systems thinking, ecology, and economics to build a deeper understanding of our role in creating a sustainable future. $80 Lead by Jaimie Cloud from the Cloud Institute for Sustainability Education

16.    Attention Students: Networking Now for the Future Wondering what your future holds? Concerned about your career?  Know where you want to be, but don't know how to get there?" Come join us as we network across the field. Sponsored by the Sierra Club, this all-day workshop is specifically designed for students by students.  The goal is to provide space where you can share your professional goals and EE experiences.  Topics include career pathing, networking in your research area and getting to know current professionals in the field.  Hope to see you there! $5

18.       No EE Teacher Prep Program Left Behind Don’t wait! Critical information teacher preparation programs need to meet the national EE standards adopted by NCATE/NAAEE. Session will include in-depth review of the new standards, strategies for incorporating them into curriculum, sample assessments, hands-on activities, and exemplary models. $75 (The $75 fee is IN ADDITION to your purchasing a full conference registration or a Thursday day rate, which you must purchase to attend this workshop).  Lead by members of NAAEE’s Pre-Service Taskforce and Margie Crutchfield of NCATE.
