What is the major focus of the association?
NAAEE members come from a wide variety of professional backgrounds including classroom teachers, nature center and museum staff, higher education faculty and government personnel who share the goal of promoting a healthy, sustainable environment through education.
NAAEE is made up of people who have thought seriously about how people become literate concerning environmental issues. NAAEE members believe education must go beyond consciousness-raising about these issues. It must prepare people to think together about the difficult decisions they have to make concerning environmental stewardship, and to work together to improve, and try to solve, environmental problems.
NAAEE recognizes the need for a coherent body of information about environmental issues. Its members also recognize that information and analysis are only part of an effective education program. To be truly effective, this body of knowledge must be integrated into all aspects of the curriculum and into all types of educating institutions for the widest array of audiences.
What are some of the major accomplishments of the association?
- Annual Conferences
NAAEE's Annual Conferences are internationally known for their quality and quantity of offerings which serve a diverse field. The 2008 Annual Conference will be the 37th successful conference for NAAEE. - NAAEE Publications
NAAEE produces, publishes, and offers a diverse array of materials of interest to practitioners, researchers, academics, students, and others involved in the field of environmental education. NAAEE publishes new monographs, manuals, directories, and other useful, exciting, and topical materials on a regular basis. - Membership
Members of NAAEE receive discounts on all NAAEE publications. - Mainstreaming Environmental Education
NAAEE is investigating several ways to make high-quality environmental education part of all education in the United States. Two possible paths are promoting state certification programs for environmental educators and working towards making environmental education a requirement for the accreditation of teachers colleges. - Environmental Education Materials Review
With the National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education (NPEEE) at Northern Illinois University, NAAEE developed a set of high-quality Guidelines for EE Materials, and reviewed over 100 popular materials using these Guidelines. - EE-Link - Electronic Access to Environmental Education Information
Through EE-Link, NAAEE provides environmental educators with online access to information about EE trainings, programs, jobs, events, organizations and other important resources. The EE-Link project is funded by the Environmental Education and Training Partnership (EETAP), through the EPA's Office of Environmental Education. Through EE-Link, NAAEE also offers consulting services on web based EE information management to state and local EE organizations. - Environmental Education Training Institute
NAAEE is involved in an effort to determine the priority in-service training needs of nonformal environmental educators such as those who work at zoos, museums, and aquaria, and natural resources professionals. Training workshops will be developed around identified needs in hopes of developing a series of ongoing professional development workshops. NAAEE is working with Project Learning Tree (PLT) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) on this initiative as a part of the Environmental Education and Training Partnership (EETAP) consortium.
