1. Brower Youth Awards 2009

Deadline: May 15, 2009
Brower Youth Awards seeks outstanding youth leaders, ages 13-22, with the power and bold vision to create environmental change. Each year, the Brower Youth Awards honors six young people with a $3000 cash award and week-long trip to the San Francisco Bay Area. Award recipients will participate that week in media and public outreach and be recognized at an awards ceremony attended by 900 members of the public.

2. Community POWER Grants

Submit Letters of Intent by: March 16, 2009
Community POWER (Partners on Waste Education and Reduction) grants available for community-based waste reduction, toxicity reduction, and recycling projects for up to $12,000. Non-environmental groups are the focus of the program. Past recipients include neighborhood organizations, schools/youth organizations, faith communities, immigrant organizations, arts groups, senior citizen organizations, and many others in the Twin Cities metropolitan area.

3. International Young Eco-Hero Awards

Deadline: February 28, 2009
Action For Nature's International Young Eco-Hero Awards will be offered again this year to recognize significant and ongoing individual environmental accomplishment in the 8 to 16 year age range. 4. We Can Change the World Competition

Deadline: March 15, 2009
NSTA, the Siemens Foundation, and Discovery Communications are launching a new sustainability education competition for middle school students to develop innovative green solutions for their schools, homes, and communities. This national middle school competition will involve a team of students identifying, researching, and recommending a solution to an environmental problem in their community. The competition will expand to kindergarten and elementary students in 2009 and to high school students in 2010.

5. Environmental Issues Investigation Workshop ~ Canada

June 3-7, 2009 ~ Ontario, Canada
The Voyageur Wilderness Programme in cooperation with The Center for Instruction, Staff Development, and Evaluation invite you to enjoy the natural wonders of the Quetico Wilderness Area while you learn how to help students develop critical thinking skills, investigate environmental issues, and plan responsible citizenship action. Strategies will be offered for integrating outdoor education with classroom issues investigations using the acclaimed IEEIA model.

6. International Course in Environmental Social Marketing & Applied EE ~ India

November 2-20, 2009 ~ Amravati, India
Environmental Education and Conservation Global and the Nature Conservation Society, Amravati will hold a three-week course showing how social marketing techniques can be integrated with education and communication strategies to produce focused campaigns that are effective tools for solving environmental problems. 10. Grounding in Botany Teachers Professional Development ~ California

June 22 - July 16, 2009 ~ San Marino, California
Grounding in Botany is a standards-based, 4-week professional development course for high school life science teachers. Instruction includes practice of hands-on experiments, exciting lectures, networking, resource reviews, and more. Topics include plant reproduction, the cell, genetics, respiration, photosynthesis, and more. Participants receive a $1,500 stipend and a $500 classroom supply grant. Follow-up workshops throughout the school year carry $100 stipends each. Out-of-area participants will receive a travel and housing allowance of $2,600.

11. Richard Louv at National Service-Learning Conference ~ Tennessee

March 18-21, 2009 ~ Nashville, Tennessee
The 20th Annual National Service-Learning Conference® will feature a wide variety of workshop sessions addressing environmental issues and service-learning. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in environmental service-learning projects in the Nashville area. 12. Teaching Ambassador Fellowship

Application Deadline: March 16, 2009
Applications for the U.S. Department of Education, 2009-2010 Teaching Ambassador Fellowship is open for currently practicing, state certified Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade public school teachers and instructional specialists/coaches with at least three years of teaching experience. Currently 20 part-time Classroom Fellows and five full-time Washington Fellows are serving as Teaching Ambassador Fellows for the pilot year (2008-2009).

14. Armenian Tree Project (ATP) Expands EE to Reach Next Generation

ATP Project Manager, Anna Jenderedjian, discusses the success of the ATP program and how this success has helped the expansion of environmental education programming throughout Armenia. ATP develops and distributes curriculum to schools, trains teachers on implementing activities for students, and engages communities by tree planting projects and reforestation.

15. Curriculum Unit on Climate Change

Facing the Future is offering Climate Change: Connections and Solutions, a set of two-week interdisciplinary curriculum units for students in grades 6-8 and grades 9-12, in pdf format. Aligned with national science and social studies standards, the lessons begin by building a foundation of understanding climate change and ends with students being able to communicate complex and interconnected issues related to climate change.

17. Mystery Class Geography, Science, and Math Project ~ Online

Teachers and students in grades 4-12 classrooms are invited to participate this winter/spring in Journey North’s Mystery Class project in which students try to find 10 secret classes hiding around the globe using the changing sunlight at each site as the clue. Students develop a deep understanding of important concepts by puzzling them out in real time.

18. Pennies for the Planet

Pennies for the Planet is a nationwide campaign that taps into the amazing power of kids to help critical conservation projects. For the last several years, kids have helped save wild places and wildlife in the United States and around the world. This campaign is created to promote conservation action and support current and future environmental leaders. Materials including a full color poster and educator’s guide, a newsletter for kids, and a participation form with incentives and awards are available for download from the Web site for classroom or at-home use.
