2. 21st Century Museum Professionals Grants

Deadline: March 16, 2009
This Institute of Museum and Library Services call for proposals is for museums, museum service organizations, and universities to submit grant proposals for projects designed to enhance the professional development of museum staff. Funding will support projects involving core management skills and/or projects that focus on collections care and management, interpretation, marketing and audience development, staff retention, visitor services, governance, and other areas of museum operations. Applicants may request from $15,000 to $500,000 each for a grant extending up to three years.

3. Just Do One Contest

The sustainable living online community, JustDoOne.org, is calling for sustainable living personal green solutions in short YouTube-style video format. Entries will be shared online, and the best video entry, as judged by an expert panel, will win $5,000.

4. Physh Ed Grant Initiative

Deadline: February 9, 2009
The Future Fisherman Foundation helps K-12 teachers connect children with nature through the Physh Ed Grant Initiative. Teachers are trying innovative approaches to get today's youth active and expose them to lifelong sports. The Physh Ed Grant Initiative has proven that fishing is a fun way to lure children back outdoors. The $2,500 funding can be used for resources to assist educators in reaching their state standards for learning in science, physical education, art, and other applicable subjects. The funding also covers a 5-day training for all grantees to prepare them to teach aquatic conservation, fishing techniques, and boating.

5. Students' Igniting Creative Energy Competition

Deadline: March 13, 2009
Students (K-12) across North America are invited to submit their creative energy projects to this competition, developed and funded by Johnson Controls and the National Energy Foundation. Entries demonstrating what can be done by individuals or groups to conserve energy in their homes, schools, or communities, may be submitted in any one of many creative formats. Service projects are also accepted. See Web site for more information.

6. Write On! Wetlands Challenge

Deadline: March 1, 2009
Environmental Concern is kicking off their fifth annual Write On! Wetlands Challenge. Part one, open to all students in grades 6-8, challenges the students to write a children’s book with a wetlands theme. The winning entry will be illustrated by students in grades k-5 and published by Environmental Concern. This year’s theme, The Case of the Wetland Mysteries, comes with a twist… all the entries must be written as a mystery story.

7. Great Backyard Bird Count 2009

February 13-16, 2009
The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual four-day event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of where the birds are across the continent. Anyone can participate, from beginning bird watchers to experts. It takes as little as 15 minutes. It’s free, fun, and easy—and it helps the birds.

8. Power Shift 2009

Power Shift 2009 is a national youth summit, presented by the Energy Action Coalition, that will bring more than 10,000 young people to Washington, DC, during this time of transformational climate and energy policy.

9. Register Today for National Environmental Education Week April 12-18, 2009

National Environmental Education Week (EE Week) promotes understanding and protection of the natural world by actively engaging K-12th grade students and educators of all subjects in an inspired week of environmental learning and service before Earth Day. This year's EE Week theme is Be Water Wise! Registered partners will have access to a wide variety of FREE environmental education resources, including a school water auditing tool and water quality monitoring resources. Partners receive certificates of participation for themselves and their students and a coupon for $10 off a purchase at Acorn Naturalists, providers of science and nature resources for the trail and classroom. Additionally, those who register before January 30 will receive a free copy of National Geographic Explorer magazine. 10. How Do You Use EE Research to Enhance Your Work in the Classroom?

Survey Open Until March 1, 2009
Pacific Education Institute is asking for your input on a quick 5-10 minute survey. This survey will gather information about how teachers and administrators use environmental education research to enhance their work in the classroom. The institute is eeking input both from environmental education practitioners as well as those who are not involved in environmental education.

Those who complete the survey and provide contact information will receive the Pacific Education Institute's Field Investigation Guide and/or the Washington Wetlands Guide.

11. Year of Science: 2009

To mark the 200th anniversary of Darwin’s birth, the 150th anniversary of his publication on the origin of species, and the 400th anniversary of the publication of Kepler's first two laws of planetary motion, the American Institute of Biological Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and more than 150 other organizations, have declared 2009 the Year of Science. Each month, the Web site will focus around a scientific theme, and include related resources, activities, video clips, podcasts, student challenges, citizen science opportunities, and more.
