16. Curriculum on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change adopted REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation in Developing countries) in December 2009. REDD will compensate tropical countries for protecting their forests. Since 15-20% of our greenhouse gas emissions come from deforestation in the tropics, successfully implementing REDD will not only save rainforests, but jump start climate change mitigation. 17. Smart by Nature: Schooling for Sustainability

The Center for Ecoliteracy's Smart by Nature: Schooling for Sustainability (Watershed Media/University of California Press, 2009) portrays a growing movement of educators, parents, and students who are remaking K-12 education to prepare students for future environmental challenges. With a foreword by Daniel Goleman, author of Ecological Intelligence, it also offers strategies for greening campuses, rethinking school food, and transforming schools into model sustainable communities. Leading environmental educator David W. Orr calls Smart by Nature “must reading.” Chez Panisse founder Alice Waters praises it as “an inspired handbook that connects hands-on experiences of the garden, the kitchen, the table, the compost heap, and the classroom curriculum!”
