1. 2009 Call for Presentations Closes on February 1st

Please share this announcement with your networks.

The 2009 NAAEE Conference in Portland, Oregon, will be here before we know it. Submit your papers early and spread the word! We expect a record number of submissions to present with the announcement of 12 conference strands and the Research Symposium's return to a two-day schedule.

2. NAAEE Requests Bids from Evaluators

NAAEE is seeking an evaluator to help assess outcomes of its EETAP activities. Work will occur primarily in March and June, with final reports due in July 2009 according to required EETAP formats.

4. Planet Connect High School Challenge Grants

Deadline: January 20, 2009
Planet Connect is a new online network for high school students to learn about the environment, green college, and career options, from the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) in partnership with The Weather Channel. Planet Connect is seeking creative ideas to fix local environmental problems and will award 25 students (ages 14-19) $1,000 each, to support their ideas and provide them with local environmental internships.

5. Young Naturalist Awards

Deadline: March 2, 2009
The American Museum of Natural History's Young Naturalist Awards program is a science-based competition inviting students (grades 7-12) to plan and conduct their own scientific investigations. The project will include questions, hypotheses, and trips into the field to gather data. Students will then write about their investigations in essays that include artwork and/or photographs that help illustrate their findings. Teachers can use this program to incorporate science curriculum into their classroom. Learn more by visiting the Web site.

6. Diversity and the Future of the U.S. Environmental Movement Webinar

January 21, 2009
The Environmental Leadership Program (ELP) Webinar will cover the rationale for the book Diversity and the Future of the U.S. Environmental Movement, with the book's editor, Emily Enderle. Ms. Enderle will lead a discussion on incorporating diversity and inclusivity so as to contribute to the success of the environmental movement.

7. Map Shows Human Toll of Climate Change

The Center for American Progress has just created a new interactive map on the human toll of climate change. This map provides scientific information on a variety of climate change threats, compiled from multiple sources, and plots this information geographically to show areas of concern. Contributions of scientific research to the database are invited. Just click on "Add a Point" and follow the directions provided.

8. 5th World Environmental Education Congress ~ Canada


Registration Deadline: February 15, 2009
The 5th World Environmental Education Congress (WEEC) theme, "Live Together on Earth," invites participants to contribute to this most important project. The search for "better living together" implies tackling the questions of identity, solidarity, and socioecologic action. Explore the links between ecology, economy, and ecosophism, and consider how environmental education can help connect these three dimensions of our relationship with the world. WEEC is being presented by the Canadian Network for Environmental Education and Communication (EECOM), Lucie Sauvé and the University of Québec in Montréal, Bob Jickling of Lakehead University in Ontario, and the Quebec Association for the Promotion of the Environmental Education (AQPERE).

9. One World: Infinite Diversity GEOEC Conference ~ Canada

10. 2009 Online EETAP Courses

The Environmental Education and Training Partnership (EETAP) and the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point (UWSP) online EE courses and schedule are listed below.

Applied Environmental Education Program Evaluation (AEEPE)
February 2 - May 1, 2009

13-week course designed to assist environmental educators and natural resource professionals in evaluating their education programs. Participants have the opportunity to develop and apply skills in designing evaluation tools such as surveys, observation forms, and interview and focus group guides.

Fundamentals of Environmental Education (FEE)
February 2 - April 24, 2009

12-week course for classroom teachers and nonformal educators who work with students and/or teachers provides the knowledge and skills necessary to incorporate quality environmental education into their instruction.

Making EE Relevant for Culturally Diverse Audiences (MEER)
February 2 - April 10, 2009

10-week course designed to provide the basic knowledge and skills needed to make EE relevant to culturally diverse audiences. Through this course participants will broaden their perspective of EE to encompass interests and issues of concern to culturally diverse audiences, assess barriers to participation among culturally diverse audiences, and apply cultural competency skills in building relationships and partnerships with members of an audience they intend to work with in the future.

Leadership Development in Natural Resources: Strategic Planning and Implementation (SPI)
Fall Semester 2009

9-week course on developing successful strategic planning and implementation models, processes, and techniques. Emphasis will be placed on managing the strategic planning process to build the capacity of organizations to provide effective environmental education programs.

12. Climate Discovery Online Courses for Educators

The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is offering a series of six- and seven-week online courses for middle and high school teachers that combine geoscience content, information about current climate research, easy to implement hands-on activities, and group discussion. The courses run concurrently from January 23 through March 15, 2009.

13. Monarchs in Mexico - Trips to the Monarch Overwintering Colonies

This trip includes visits to three Monarch colonies. Learn about local efforts to promote sustainable and environmentally sound economic activities with tours of Alternare, a tree nursery, and a local school. Three separate weeklong trips are offered by Monarchs Across Georgia, a part of the Environmental Education Alliance of Georgia:

14. University of Montana Wilderness Course ~ Online

January 26 - May 16, 2009 ~ Online
Registration Deadline: January 21, 2009

RECM/FOR 405: Managing the Wilderness Resource (4 credits UG) and 561: Managing Wilderness Ecosystems (4 credits G) will study ecosystem characteristics and basic principles of wilderness management. The online format will enable students to work through the course efficiently and at their own convenience while benefiting from discussion with other students, agency managers, and academics.

15. Camp Kestrel Wins International Education Award

Alliance Landfill's Camp Kestrel Habitat Workshop series has received the Wildlife Habitat Council's 2008 Project of the Year Award for the landfill's use of its property as a classroom in the community. The Corporate Lands for Learning Project of the Year award recognizes a program for outstanding environmental education, stewardship, and voluntary employee efforts.

16. Environmental Health Science Education

The Environmental Health Perspectives (EHP) environmental health science lessons meet National Science Education Standards in biology, chemistry, environmental science, geology, and physical science, and are targeted at students in grades 9-12. 17. Environmental Science Course Now on Encyclopedia of Earth (EoE)

Based on curriculum developed for California schools, the Advanced Placement Environmental Science course developed by the University of California College Prep initiative is now available through the EoE Web site. The online course covers all material outlined by the College Board and includes 25 chapters on topics ranging from energy flows to environmental laws and regulations, and the chapters may be used independently or sequentially as a full course. In addition, the chapters can serve as resources for teachers and students in other science courses at the high school or undergraduate level. The EoE is one component of the Earth Portal, which also include the Earth Forum, presenting blogs by scientists, and Earth News, featuring the latest environmental news from around the globe.

18. Free Download of “Cedars” Song about the Environment

An order of Franciscan Sisters who are active in environmental concerns is featuring Virginia singer-songwriter Andrew McKnight this month on their 'Franciscanized World' page. They are offering a free download of his song 'Cedars', a moving meditation on the development occurring in Virginia. Accompanied by Shanna Franklin's Rhode Island photo "The Journey" as the Image of the Month.

19. New NSTA Book Teaches the Science of Climate Change

Climate Change From Pole to Pole: Biology Investigations offers case studies and background information on how to teach the science of climate change. The six researched and field-tested activities building on four content chapters, provide students the opportunity to solve real-life scientific problems using guiding questions, graphs and data tables, short reading assignments, and independent research.

20. Smart by Nature: Schooling for Sustainability

This Center for Ecoliteracy’s initiative is for K-12 educators, parents, and others who are helping young people gain the knowledge, skills, and values essential to sustainable living. The Smart by Nature Initiative is based on four guiding principles: Nature Is Our Teacher; Sustainability Is a Community Practice; The Real World Is the Optimal Learning Environment; and Sustainable Living Is Rooted in a Deep Knowledge of Place. Among other projects from the Center for Ecoliteracy, includes the Rethinking School Lunch initiative and Linking Food, Culture, and the Environment.
