1. Sierra Club and NAAEE’s Green Youth Leader Award

Nomination Deadline: July 31, 2008
Sierra Club and NAAEE are pleased to announce the creation of a new award for high school students. The Sierra Club and NAAEE Green Youth Leader Award will be presented to a high school student in recognition of a contribution to, or leadership in, environmental education at the local, state/provincial, regional, national, or global level. The award will be presented at the Awards Banquet during the NAAEE Annual Conference in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday, October 18, 2008. Nominations are now being accepted. A complete award description, criteria, and nomination form are available online.
Nominator must be a member in good standing of either NAAEE or Sierra Club.

2. Early Bird Deadline's Approaching Fast - August 15!

Save money by registering for the NAAEE 37th annual conference by August 15, the Early Bird Deadline. After that date, you can still register online but it will cost you more. Registering early also ensures that you get a place in the field experience or workshops that you want to attend.

3. When in Kansas Learn About Space - Above and Below the Horizon

One of the largest collections of space-related artifacts outside of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum is found in the Kansas Cosmosphere & Space Center. The Cosmosphere is located in Hutchinson – just 45 minutes northwest of Wichita and an easy day trip for NAAEE conference attendees. In addition to learning about the space race, visitors can watch the IMAX film, "Grand Canyon Adventure." The film follows two environmentalists rafting on the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. It addresses issues such as the depletion of clean, fresh water in the Earth’s waterways.

4. Fulbright Scholar Award ~ Taiwan

Deadline: August 1, 2008
The Fulbright Scholar Program is offering several lecturing awards in environmental education in Taiwan for 2009-10. These awards provide scholars the opportunity to teach university-level courses in their area of specialization. Topics of interest include but are not limited to environmental interpretation, experimental education, education for sustainable development, and outdoor environmental education. Lecturing is in English. U.S. citizenship and a Ph.D. or its equivalent terminal/professional degree are required.

5. Nestle Very Best in Youth Program

Deadline: November 20, 2008
The Nestle Very Best in Youth Program honors young people (ages 13-18) who have excelled in school and who are making their community and the world a better place. The winners will be featured in a special publication and will receive a trip with a parent or legal guardian to Los Angeles for the Nestlé Very Best In Youth awards ceremony in July 2009. The trip will include round-trip air travel, hotel accommodations for three nights, and $500 in spending money. In addition, Nestlé will donate $1,000 in the name of each winner to the charity of his or her choice.

6. Sylvan Dell Publishing Announces Educational Resource Grant

The grant provides a free, one-year site license (2008/09 school year) for unlimited access to 35 Sylvan Dell eBooks, featuring flipviewer technology with selectable English and Spanish text and audio. Grants will be awarded to one elementary school per district and open to every district in the United States and Canada. Each science, math, or nature themed picturebook includes a "For Creative Minds" educational section. Teaching activities and interactive quizzes are available free online.

7. Washington Minority Youth Environmental Training Institute ~ Washington, DC

August 4-8, 2008 ~ Washington, DC
The Washington Institute is an intensive, science-based, five-day environmental program for talented teens, aged 16-18, selected competitively from across the Washington, DC area. Through a full scholarship, the National Hispanic Environmental Council (NHEC) will pay all expenses for students accepted into the Institute. Held in conjunction with and funded by the National Park Service (NPS), the Institute will be conducted at several national parks in the Washington area and is designed to teach students about the environment and introduce them to NPS and their mission.

8. EETAP Fall Courses ~ Online

Applied Environmental Education Program Evaluation (AEEPE): September 8 - December 5, 2008 ~ Online
This 13-week course is designed to assist environmental educators and natural resource professionals in evaluating their education programs. $200 scholarships are offered to participants that are EE leaders and/or responsible for an EE program.

Fundamentals of Environmental Education (FEE): September 8 - November 28, 2008 ~ Online
A 12-week online course is appropriate for classroom teachers and for nonformal educators who work with students and/or teachers. It provides educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to incorporate quality environmental education into their instruction. $200 scholarships are offered to state EE leaders.

Leadership Development in Natural Resources: Strategic Planning and Implementation: September 22 - November 21, 2008 ~ Online
Learn how to develop successful strategic planning and implementation models, processes, and techniques. Emphasis will be placed on managing the strategic planning process to build the capacity of organizations to provide effective environmental education programs.

Making EE Relevant for Culturally Diverse Audiences (MEER): September 2 - November 6, 2008 ~ Online
This 10-week course is designed to provide participants with the basic knowledge and skills needed to make EE relevant to culturally diverse audiences. Through this course participants will broaden their perspective of EE to encompass interests and issues of concern to culturally diverse audiences, assess barriers to participation among these audiences, and apply cultural competency skills in building relationships and partnerships with members of an audience they intend to work with in the future. $200 scholarships are offered to participants that are EE leaders and/or responsible for an EE program.

9. Education in a Changing Climate ~ Maine

July 27 - August 2, 2008 ~ Unity, Maine
The Orion Society and Unity College in Maine are offering this unique, week-long workshop that challenges educators at all levels to teach about the environment in innovative ways and develop new audiences and venues for environmental learning. Through field experiences, conversations, and presentations, participants will use their creativity and imagination to develop skills that help them bring urgent environmental issues—especially climate change—into their classrooms, nature centers, zoos, museums, and curriculum. Core faculty includes scientist Nalini Nadkarni, writer/activist Janisse Ray, writer/educator Lowell Monke, and Carey E. Stanton of the National Wildlife Federation.

11. Will Steger Foundation Summer Institute for Climate Change Education ~ Minnesota

August 11-13, 2008 ~ Minnesota
The Institute is a great opportunity to enhance your own understanding of climate change. Dr. James Hansen, renowned NASA climate scientist, will be the keynote speaker to discuss the latest on climate science. Institute participants will receive a resource binder with new climate change curricula, expedition supplements, and action resources. The theme of the Institute is "Changing School Culture" with a focus on reducing a school's carbon footprint, from classroom to community.

13. "Clear Cut" Documentary Release

Clear Cut tells the story of Philomath, Oregon, a rural logging town that becomes harshly divided by changing environmental and educational beliefs. The conflict hinges upon a local foundation that, in protest to cultural changes, threatens to withdraw its traditional college scholarship program for high school graduates. Clear Cut illustrates the challenges faced by foundations and the communities they serve when ideological differences come to the forefront.

14. Earth Adventure – Environmental programs at school

Earth Adventure brings environmental programs to schools featuring the Earth Balloon, a 20' diameter inflatable model of the earth. Earth Adventure teachers facilitate all programs and take students on an adventure around and inside the earth to learn about eco-systems, rain forests, climate change, water resources, conservation, and more.

15. How Farm Animal Production Impacts the Environment

This new Pew Commission report, based on a thirty-month investigation into industrial farm animal production, illustrates how US food animal production is not economically or environmentally sustainable. The report, Putting Meat on the Table: Industrial Farm Animal Production in America, details the risks to public health, the environment, and animal welfare.

17. New NASA Global Climate Change Site

This new Web site from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory is devoted to educating the public about Earth's changing climate, providing easy-to-understand information about climate change and how NASA studies it. Some features include a continuous snapshot of the condition of Earth's ice sheets, global average temperatures, sea level change, and concentrations of greenhouse gases.

18. Simple Steps to Protect the Planet

From the Natural Resources Defense Council, the Simple Steps Web site is designed to help people who are looking for easy, environmentally friendly actions they can take every day to protect their health, their home, and the planet. Site visitors are invited to share their experiences and additional tips through a blog that also provides an archive of topics and comments.
