1. NAAEE Seeks Photos for “EE Year in Review”

Deadline for submission: August 15, 2009
We're nearly half way through 2009 and it's time to start looking backward at what we've already accomplished, and forward at how we will celebrate our successes at the NAAEE conference. We're compiling an "EE Year in Review" show - with photos you submit and the ones we take at the conference - to send to all conference participants on DVD. Please share the highlights of your EE programs, your local award winners, how you have reached new and diverse audiences, with visual images in a 300 dpi format on a CD ROM. Please include credit to the photographer for each image you send.

2. EPA Rachel Carson Contest

Deadline: June 10, 2009
The US EPA, along with the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange, Generations United, and the Rachel Carson Council, Inc., are sponsoring the 3rd Annual Rachel Carson intergenerational "Sense of Wonder" contest. Entries must involve an intergenerational team and describe how this project brought the team in touch with the natural world. This approach reflects Carson's desire to have adults share nature and discovery with children. Submissions are accepted in the categories of photography, essay, poetry, and dance.

3. Place, Experience, & the Socioecological ~ Canada

4. Celebrate Endangered Species Day

May 15, 2009
Celebrate the fourth annual national Endangered Species Day on May 15, 2009. The purpose of Endangered Species Day (first approved by the US Senate in 2006) is to emphasize the importance of protecting threatened/endangered plant/animal species and to highlight success stories of species recovery. Visit the Web site for activity ideas for in and out of the classroom, including discussions about endangered species, guest speakers, essay and art lessons, poster activity (with some students' art to be displayed later), and field trips. Resource materials, including sample curricula, are also available.

5. International Migratory Bird Day (IMBD)

Throughout this Spring, 350+ IMBD events will reach over 500,000 people in the western hemisphere. International Migratory Bird Day, coordinated by Environment for the Americas, marked its 17th year on May 9, 2009, with a celebration of Birds in Culture -- an exploration of the roles birds have played in Native cultures. Birds have been critical to Tribal life and are represented in cave art, weavings, pottery, stories, music, and ceremonies. Learn more about birds in culture, find educational resources for your programs, view the art and special materials created for the 2009 celebration, and locate an event near you on the Explorer's Map.

6. Sustaining Biodiversity in a Changing Environment ~ Oregon

May 28-30, 2009 ~ Selma, Oregon
The Deer Creek Center for Field Research and Education, the Siskiyou Field Institute, and Southern Oregon University are pleased to announce the Third Conference on Klamath-Siskiyou Ecology: "Sustaining Biodiversity in a Changing Environment." This conference will bring together scientists, resource managers, and engaged citizens to discuss the scope and consequences of environmental change in the ecologically diverse Klamath-Siskiyou bioregion.

7. UM Launches Online Wilderness Management Graduate Certificate

The University of Montana is now offering a Graduate Certificate in Wilderness Management. The certificate provides students and professionals with training and expertise in the key topics related to wilderness management. Four online courses cover the history and philosophy of the wilderness system, wilderness law and policy, wilderness recreation management, wilderness ecosystem conservation and resource monitoring, and wilderness planning. Courses are offered as traditional correspondence courses or interactive online courses through the Wilderness Management Distance Education Program in the College of Forestry and Conservation.

8. Urban Environmental Leadership Masters Program ~ Massachusetts

This summer Lesley University introduces a new Master of Arts in Urban Environmental Leadership, a low-residency program preparing students to create environmental and social change in the world’s cities. Students in the program investigate urban ecology, environmental justice, urban environmental history, sustainability, and international urban development, all with an eye on the way human forces shape the urban environment.

9. Virginia Natural Resources Leadership Institute

Application Deadline for 2009-2010: May 29, 2009
The Virginia Natural Resources Leadership Institute (VNRLI) is a unique program consisting of six three-day leadership training sessions at a variety of locations across Virginia where a host of complex environmental issues are explored against the backdrop of learning collaborative problem-solving techniques. 10. Watershed Academy Webcast: Wetlands - Reconnecting Youth with Nature

May 28, 2009, 1-2:30 PM EDT
This special American Wetlands Month Webcast will explore the unique role wetlands can play in reconnecting young people with nature. Distinguished speakers Richard Louv from the Children & Nature Network, Suzanne Pittenger-Slear from Environmental Concern, and Davon Kenneth Johnson from Earth Conservation Corps will discuss their groups’ efforts to reverse trends that have seen our youth become more distanced from the natural world and have less meaningful experiences with nature.

A research into "Green Study in French" is looking into ways to ally immersion in French language as well as in cultural and environmental action. The study would like to hear about existing initiatives for student stays/courses/voluntary work in France or other French-speaking countries.

13. Celebrate Spring with Project BudBurst

Join thousands of others in gathering valuable environmental information with Project BudBurst. Project BudBurst is a national field campaign for educators, students, families, and other volunteers designed to engage the public in making careful observations of the phenophases such as first leafing, first flower, and first fruit ripening of a diversity of trees, shrubs, flowers, and grasses in their local area. Participants contribute to a better understanding of how changing climates impact plant species. For the 2009 field campaign, a number of new features have been added to the Web site.

16. MonarchLIVE Highlights Butterfly Migration

May 2009
Teachers can take their students on an electronic field trip and learn about monarch butterflies with MonarchLIVE: A Distance Learning Adventure. Two live, 60-minute Web casts are planned for May 2009 from noon to 1 p.m. Eastern Time. On May 19, MonachLIVE will visit Eden Place, an urban oasis in Chicago that has had big results for butterflies and people. On May 21, MonarchLIVE will go to Battle Creek Environmental School in St. Paul, Minnesota. The program will feature information about monarch migration, spring and summer life cycle, the importance of milkweed, threats to monarchs, and how to preserve monarchs and their habitats.

17. New book: Teaching Green - The High School Years

19. Teens for Planet Earth Social Networking Site

Teens for Planet Earth (T4PE) has been completely transformed into a social networking site with a brand new look and a whole new set of ways to help teens and adults who work with teens carry out environmental service-learning projects. Members can connect with teammates and friends as well as many other T4PE members in their area and around the world. They can share photos and videos of their projects; start or comment on a blog, post upcoming events related to their projects; find resources to help them carry out a successful project; start a group to communicate with team members, keep track of tasks, and encourage reflection; offer and receive advice on conducting service-learning projects; and much more.
