2. GreenWorks! Butterfly Garden Grants

Deadline: December 1, 2008
Through MonarchLIVE - A Distance Learning Adventure, students can follow the magical migration of monarch butterflies through a series of free live, interactive field trips broadcast from Mexico, the U.S., and Canada. Participating teachers can apply for one of Project Learning Tree's GreenWorks! grants to create a butterfly garden in their schoolyard or community.

3. Young Naturalist Awards Competition

Deadline: March 2, 2009
Presented by the American Museum of Natural History and sponsored by Alcoa Foundation, the Young Naturalist Awards, an inquiry-based research competition, invites students in grades 7-12 to conduct research in the natural world. Students investigate questions they have in the areas of ecology, biology, Earth science, and astronomy and present their findings in an essay. Winners (two from each grade) receive cash awards and an all-expense paid trip to New York City to attend the awards ceremony at the American Museum of Natural History.

4. Environmental Communication for Behavior Change ~ Online

Duke Environmental Leadership (DEL) Program

This course provides environmental professionals with an introduction to the strategies and tools of environmental communication that effectively lead to changes in behavior. 6. Habitable Planet Course ~ Online

Produced by the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in association with the Harvard University Center for the Environment, the course consists of 13 half-hour streaming video programs, online text, professional development guide, and a Web site. Graduate credit is available from participating institutions. All online materials are free of charge and hard copies of materials are available at nominal cost.

7. Monarchs in Mexico - Trips to the Monarch Overwintering Colonies

This trip includes visits to three Monarch colonies. Learn about local efforts to promote sustainable and environmentally sound economic activities with tours of Alternare, a tree nursery, and a local school. Three separate weeklong trips are offered by Monarchs Across Georgia, a part of the Environmental Education Alliance of Georgia:

8. NEED Energize Your Classroom Workshops ~ Kentucky

The Kentucky NEED (National Energy Education Development) Project is offering energy workshops for teachers during November and December, at various locations throughout Kentucky. The workshops are packed with curriculum and resources to teach energy in any discipline, at any grade level. Substitute reimbursement for up to two teachers per school is provided. Register online.

9. Smithsonian-Mason Semester ~ Virginia

The Smithsonian-Mason Semester is a resident program for undergraduates in conservation studies at the National Zoological Park Conservation and Research Center in Front Royal, Virginia. This 16-credit program, housed in a Smithsonian research facility adjacent to the Shenandoah National Park, offers students the opportunity to live and learn among prominent research scientists, educators, conservation practitioners, and some of the rarest species on earth.

10. Call for Collaboration in Research Project

The DPU/Aarhus University is inviting research collaboration on its development of new educational methods in the fields of energy, health, and sustainable development. A number of universities worldwide work with energy, environmental problems, and sustainable development, however, only a few work with these topics in an educational context, and even fewer do this with an emphasis on the present socio-cultural reality and a participatory, social learning approach.

11. EETAP Seeking Consultant to Design & Conduct Survey

Proposal are due by December 5, 2008.
The Environmental Education and Training Partnership (EETAP) is seeking a consultant/contractor to design and conduct a national study to identify the professional development needs and environmental education priorities of education professionals working in non-formal and formal education settings in the United States. The results of the study will be shared with the environmental education community to assist in promoting partnerships and prevent duplication of efforts in addressing identified gaps. This study is supported by the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Education Division and United States Fish and Wildlife Service/National Conservation Training Center through the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. 13. MTV Switch Climate Change Campaign

This MTV climate change marketing campaign includes an ad about businesses that "greenwash" - misleading consumers about how environmentally friendly they are. One element, by ad agency 180 Amsterdam, features an animated character singing about how to identify "fake greens". This Green Song is part of the youth-targeted climate change initiative MTV Switch.

14. Mark Trail Activity Book

Mark Trail Living on the Wild Side Responsibly is an activity book about living near wildlands. The activities in this book address either all or part of some of the National Achievement Standards depending on how thoroughly the activity is completed or if expansions to the base activity are created. Appropriate for grades 3-6.
