EETAP Releases New Study: Issues Associated with Nonformal Environmental Education CertificationThis study gauged the interest among nonformal environmental educators, their employers, and college/university trainers in certification, the various dimensions of value which they ascribe to certification, and their thoughts about how it might best be implemented. Questions regarding the likelihood of seeking certification, the level of support for developing certification programs, and degree of influence certification might have on hiring practices guided the study. Four populations of respondents were surveyed: nonformal EE practitioners, NAAEE affiliate liaisons, employers of nonformal environmental educators, and college/university faculty. Findings suggest that support for certification varies among these populations. The report identifies six recommendations and details suggested steps to help stakeholders advance development and implementation of state environmental educator certification programs. The study also suggests that certification programs should be considered in the larger and more strategic context of state capacity building. The study was conducted by the Environmental Education Association of Oregon. To read or download the study visit: http://eetap.org/html/new_reports.php back to top 16. Survey Shows Gap between Scientists and PublicJuly 19, 2009, New York Times article, by Cornelia Dean, discusses a new Pew Research Center survey results show a large gap between what scientists think and the views of ordinary Americans about climate change and other related issues. The survey shows that while most scientists believe that humans are the cause of global warming, about half of the public disagrees, and 11 percent does not believe in climate change at all. These differences in scientific knowledge and public belief illustrate a need for scientists to better engage the public and present their research and data in a clear and understandable form. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/10/science/10survey... back to top 26. The Gravestone ProjectThe Geological Society of America (GSA) is inviting the public to measure gravestones to gain data on air pollution and climate change since the Industrial Revolution. Because white marble gravestones are highly susceptible to erosion, and bear dates, the stones can help scientists infer a region's climate and pollution history.
