1. 2008 NAAEE Awards ~ Call for Nominations
The NAAEE Awards Committee announces the Call for Nominations for the 2008 NAAEE Awards. NAAEE members can recognize individuals and organizations that excel in EE through our annual awards program. Nominations must be received by April 18, 2008. (Please note that you or your co-nominator must be a member of NAAEE in order to nominate an individual or organization for an award.)
The Awards will be presented on October 18, 2008, at the 2008 NAAEE annual conference in Wichita, Kansas.

2. First Border-Wide EE Conference ~ CFP

3. Conference Menu Planning Underway
Hyatt Regency Wichita and Kansas Grown Farmers' Market plan menu for 2008 Conference
The Hyatt Regency Wichita and the Kansas Grown Farmers' Market met February 12 to discuss possible menus for the 2008 NAAEE Conference. The next step in this planning process is a "tasting" for the Hyatt's Chef on March 8. The taste will consist of approximately 20 Kansas farmers providing examples of their products. 4. Experience Wichita's History
Attendees of the 2008 NAAEE Annual Conference have the opportunity to walk through Wichitas past. Old Cowtown Museum is a living history museum that opens a window to Wichitas early years as a stop for cattle drives from Texas. In addition, the path connecting the museums visitor center to the main exhibit area is lined with samples of the tallgrass prairie that at one time covered most of the Great Plains. Just a few blocks to the east of Cowtown, the Mid-America All-Indian Center, along with the Keeper of the Plains plaza, pays tribute to the Native Americans who populated the region prior to the arrival of settlers. 5. Learn About the 8 Wonders of Kansas
Recently, 24,070 people voted to determine the 8 Wonders of Kansas! Come early or stay late and see some of our best natural and man-made attractions.
Here are a few:
Lake Scott State Park in Scott County was one of the finalists for the 8 Wonders of Kansas because of the breathtaking relief carved into the steep bluffs of the Ogallala Formation.Monument Rocks and Castle Rock in Gove County were one of the top 8 Wonders of Kansas because of the significant fossils found in these ancient chalk beds and because the highly eroded spires make them spectacular landmarks on the plains of western Kansas.Where would you go in Kansas to see stunning red-colored butte-and-mesa topography? The backroads Gypsum Hills Scenic Drive in Barber County will show you why this was a finalist for the 8 Wonders of Kansas.Learn more at:

7. Butler-Cooley Excellence in Teaching Award
Deadline: May 1, 2008 The Turnaround Management Association (TMA) 2008 Butler-Cooley Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes teachers who have changed the lives of students and communities in which they live. The program, funded by the John Wm. Butler Foundation, provides $5,000 cash stipends to three to five public or private school teachers and travel and lodging expenses to TMAs 2008 Annual Convention and 20th anniversary celebration in New Orleans, Louisiana, October 27-29.

8. Ecology/Environmental Science Teaching Award
Nomination Deadline: March 15, 2008 This National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT) award will be given to a secondary school teacher who has successfully developed and demonstrated an innovative approach in the teaching of ecology/environmental science and has carried his/her commitment to the environment into the community. Sponsored by Vernier Software & Technology, the award includes $1,000 toward travel expenses to the NABT Professional Development Conference, $500 of Vernier equipment, and a one-year complimentary NABT membership.

9. Students Write On! Wetlands Challenge
Call for Authors (Grades 7-9) Deadline: April 1, 2008 Call for Illustrators (Grades K-6) Begins May 1, 2008 May is American Wetlands Month! Get your students involved and engaged with the 2008 Write On! Wetlands Challenge. Science, reading, and the arts collide in this annual competition that first asks middle schoolers to compose a childrens book about wetlands and then asks elementary students to illustrate the winning manuscript. The theme for 2008 is Marshy Migrations: Journeys of Lifetime. Each year, animals of all kinds (not just birds!) depend on wetlands for food and protection as they prepare for and complete their seasonal migration routes. 10. Candiani Centro Culturale: Don't Hold your Breath ~ Italy
March 7 - April 6, 2008 ~ Venice, Italy The focus of the "Don't Hold your Breath" photography exhibit and conference series is on increased ethical-environmental awareness, developed by the Italo-Canadian artist Joanne Vanin and curated by Cristina Gazzola.

13. Celebrate Endangered Species Day
May 16, 2008 The third annual national Endangered Species Day focus is on protecting imperiled species like polar bears, penguins, coral, migratory birds, salmon, and frogs from global warming. 16. Free Astronomy Workshop for Educators ~ Washington
May 7-9, 2008 ~ Seattle, Washington Application Deadline: March 7, 2008 Apply now for Astronomy from the Ground Up's next free workshop for science, nature center, and museum educators! Thanks to support from the National Science Foundation, the workshop is completely free for participating educators. Offered by the Astronomical Society of the Pacific in collaboration with the National Optical Astronomy Observatory, and the Association of Science-Technology Centers, training is through a face-to-face three-day workshop. National Environmental Education Week, made possible by Canon USA, promotes understanding and protection of the natural world by actively engaging K-12th grade students and educators of all subjects in an inspired week of environmental learning and service before Earth Day. To date over 650 schools, nature centers, zoos, museums, and aquariums from around the country have pledged to implement EE Week activities, and you can join them!

27. Kentucky College EE Programs Will Likely Weather Budget Cuts

It was not so long ago, and it still remains the case in many states, that whenever budgets need to be tightened, environmental education gets squeezed out. But Teddie Phillipson, the director of the year-old Center for Environmental Education at the University of Louisville, said a growing respect for environmental education, backed by resources, means Kentucky's current budget crisis won't put environmental education in critical condition.
