1. Make your Donation to NAAEE go Farther through the Parade Magazine Giving Challenge

As described in the Sunday, January 20, 2008 Parade Magazine inserted in many Sunday newspapers, Parade and the Case Foundation are conducting a charitable giving challenge. Donate to your favorite charity (that would be NAAEE) through the Web site Parade.com/givingchallenge. The charities that attract the greatest number of donors by January 31 will each get $50,000 -- Parade and the Case Foundation are hoping that everyone will email all their friends about the challenge.

At a minimum, NAAEE could receive $1,000.

5. 2008 Volvo Adventure Awards

Deadline: January 31, 2008
In collaboration with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), the Volvo Adventure Award rewards young people creating their own environmental projects. There are two competitions for the 2008 awards. The Adventure Award is for youth, ages 13-16, working in groups of two to five. The second competition is the Great Big Bob the Bunny Cartoon contest for youth under the age of 13, to create a cartoon picture using Bob the bunny.

6. More Kids in the Woods ~ Call for Proposals

Deadline: February 15, 2008
This agency-wide Forest Service call for proposals for "More Kids in the Woods" projects is part of a continuing effort to improve childrens’ health by reconnecting them with nature. Project proposals must be submitted to a Forest Service office or field unit by February 15, 2008. Projects need to engage non-federal partners with at least a 1:1 match. Matching contributions may be in-kind or cash.

7. National Essay Contest for High School Students

Deadline: February 1, 2008
The United States Institute of Peace National Peace Essay Contest is designed to expand educational opportunities for America's youth. Students (grades 9-12) are asked to write a 1500-word essay on the topic "Natural Resources and Conflict" stating what they believe are the necessary elements for the development of fair, peaceful, or effective use of natural resources after a conflict.

8. World Wetlands Day Contest

World Wetlands Day is February 2, 2008
To celebrate World Wetlands Day, Environmental Concern Inc., introduces a creative writing competition with a twist - "Wet Your Appetite: Cuisine for Critters Cookbook." Students in grades 8-12 are challenged to write a creative wetland recipe. Here’s the twist, the recipe will be written for a specific wetland organism living in one of the 22 U.S. Ramsar Wetlands of International Importance.

9. EECO Winter Conference 2008 ~ Ohio

February 1-3, 2008 ~ Peninsula, Ohio
The Environmental Education Council of Ohio's (EECO) 26th Annual Winter Conference "Winter Snow – Eco Arts and Sustainability" will focus on how educators can use artistic expression as a way to teach students about sustainability. One semester hour of graduate credit is available from Ashland University.

10. Northwest Connections' Landscape and Livelihood Field Semester ~ Montana

Landscape and Livelihood: A field semester in ecology and community based conservation immerses a small group of students in an intensive two-month field educational program. Reduced registration rate if received by February 1, 2008. Receive 15 semester credits from the University of Montana.

13. The Great Lakes Rock! ~ Online

January 27 - February 8, 2008 ~ Online
Centers for Ocean Sciences Education Excellence (COSEE) Great Lakes is offering this free online workshop focusing on the geology of the lake basin and its relevance to the lakes themselves and the life of the region. Six presentations by experts will be offered over the workshop period, and the scientists will be available to answer questions related to their topics. Converse with the scientists and other educators, collect teaching resources, share experiences, and expand your understanding of Great Lakes science. Graduate credit is available.

14. Wilderness & Civilization Program ~ Montana

The two-semester Wilderness and Civilization Program offers students a minor in Wilderness Studies and is designed to complement any major. Many of the program courses meet general education and/or honors requirements. Students learn first-hand how the ecology, politics, history, and culture of a place interact and shape conservation efforts.

20. Exploratorium Targets Interactive Learning with DNA Files III

Now in its third series, Peabody Award-winning The DNA Files offers listeners and Web users an informal education in the genomics revolution and follow-on research and technology, its scientific underpinnings, and related social, philosophical, and legal issues. In conjunction with the five new episodes, the Exploratorium has created interactive workshops that provide an introduction to genetics for general audiences. The workshops can be used on their own or as an educational supplement to The DNA Files radio programs.

21. New Guide for Beginning Trackers

Mammal Tracks and Scat: Life-Size Tracking Guide, by Lynn Levine, a Vermont consulting forester and environmental educator, is a book written for the beginner tracker. 23. The Story of Stuff

Looking for a resource to stimulate a class discussion about sustainability? The Story of Stuff is a fast-paced 20-minute film that shows the environmental and social impact of the material consumption that drives our current economy, and show how we can work together for a more sustainable and just world.
