NAAEE Announcements

1. NAAEE Conference Scholarships Offered - Apply Now

NAAEE is pleased to announce the availability of the following scholarship opportunities for the 2008 conference:

  • Environmental Education Scholarship for Academic Study in Host State -- A $500 or $1,000 scholarship which will include conference registration, will be awarded to at least one undergraduate or graduate student at a Kansas college or university, who is currently enrolled in a degree program that will prepare him/her to be an environmental educator in formal or non-formal setting. Deadline: May 1, 2008

  • Affordability Scholarship -- A limited number of Affordability Scholarships will be awarded to provide discounted full conference registration to NAAEE members who have lower incomes and little or no financial support from their employer. (Students and retirees are not eligible.) Deadline: June 15, 2008

  • Diversity Scholarship -- Diversity is a key element of NAAEE’s formal Strategic Plan to enrich the field of environmental education. Diversity scholarships are an opportunity to promote interaction and exchange within a wide variety of cultures and perspectives. Deadline: June 15, 2008

  • The William B. Stapp College Student Scholarship -- The Stapp Fund was established in 2001 in honor of NAAEE international leader Dr. Bill Stapp (1930-2001) to help students from around the world attend NAAEE's annual conference. Deadline: June 15, 2008

    2. 2008 NAAEE Awards ~ Call for Nominations

    The NAAEE Awards Committee announces the Call for Nominations for the 2008 NAAEE Awards. NAAEE members can recognize individuals and organizations that excel in EE through our annual awards program. Nominations must be received by April 18, 2008. (Please note that you or your co-nominator must be a member of NAAEE in order to nominate an individual or organization for an award.)

    The Awards will be presented on October 18, 2008, at the 2008 NAAEE annual conference in Wichita, Kansas.

    3. Adopt the Guidelines

    How can your organization promote quality environmental education? The answer is, Adopt the Guidelines!

    NAAEE and the National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education are encouraging stakeholder groups to adopt the Guidelines and apply them to their work. By adopting the Guidelines, your organization will help to develop awareness of the National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education, improve the quality of environmental education practice, and build credibility for the field.     4. CFP Deadline Reminder for 2008 Research Symposium

    Deadline: April 15, 2008
    Students Poster Proposals Deadline: May 31st

    The 2008 NAAEE Research Symposium will take place on October 14-15, 2008, before the NAAEE conference begins, and will provide a forum to engage in discussion around the theme "EE Research: To What End?" Several new presentation formats have been added to facilitate discussion of research ideas. Four hours of professional development workshops will be included for graduate students, in addition to the annual graduate student breakfast.

    6. Kansas Farmers Host “Tasting” for Hyatt Regency Wichita

    Fifteen local farmers from the Kansas Grown Farmers’ Market set up booths in March at the Hyatt Regency Wichita so the Hyatt’s chefs could taste their local farm products in advance of the NAAEE conference. The HRW Executive Chef, Sous Chef, Director of Food and Beverage, Director of Catering, and the Convention Services Manager attended the event. Pastries, peanut brittle, vegetables, fruits, and honey were tasted. The Executive Chef made a point to talk with each vendor at length. The entire hotel is buzzing with excitement at the possibilities for the menus that will be created from local food sources during the NAAEE conference.

    7. Film Your Issue (FYI) Competition for Students

    Deadline: April 14, 2008
    The global, Internet-based, FYI competition encourages high school and college students (ages 14-24) to engage in pressing contemporary issues by creating and uploading two-minute short films on issues that affect their generation. FYI - Film Your Issue encourages young people to add their voices to the public dialogue and underscores how even an individual voice can influence public debate.

    8. International Teacher Program ~ Galapagos Islands

    Application Deadline: May 9, 2008
    November 22 - December 6, 2008

    The 2008 Toyota International Teacher Program to the Galapagos Islands will provide a fully-funded professional development experience for 30 educators to this World Heritage Site in the Pacific Ocean. Full time teachers and teacher librarians in grades 6-12 are encouraged to apply.

    9. Leopold Leadership 2009 Fellowship Program

    Deadline: April 14, 2008
    The Leopold Leadership Program invites mid-career academic environmental scientists from North America (Canada, Mexico, and the United States) to apply for the 2009 Leopold Leadership Fellowships. The mission of the Leopold Leadership Program is to advance environmental decision making by providing academic environmental scientists with the skills and connections they need to be effective leaders and communicators.

    10. NEA Learning and Leadership Grants

    Deadline: June 1, 2008
    These National Education Association (NEA) grants fund professional development experiences for individuals and fund groups for their collegial study. All professional development must improve practice, curriculum, and student achievement. The grant amount is $2,000 for individuals and $5,000 for groups.

    11. NOAEE Bay Watershed Education Grants

    Application Deadline: April 16, 2008
    Grants are available for an environmental education program that promotes locally relevant, experiential learning in the K-12 environment. Funded projects provide meaningful watershed educational experiences for students, related professional development for teachers, and helps to support regional education and environmental priorities in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

    12. Climate and Poverty Earth Day Resource

    This Earth Day, the National Council of Churches Eco-Justice Programs is marking Earth Day Sunday (the Sunday closest to Earth Day) by recognizing the interconnectedness of poverty and climate change and offering a resource for worship, adult study, and youth activities.     13. Mindful Living: Human Health, Pollution, and Toxics

    New Guide on the Health and Environmental Effects of Pollution and Toxins for Congregations
    Pollution of the air, land, and water, along with toxic chemicals found in products ranging from children’s toys to baby bottles are leading to unprecedented illnesses and disease. These conditions range from asthma to cancer. The National Council of Churches is offering this resource to give people of faith the tools to respond in their home, their congregation, and their community.     16. Study Natural Ecosystems in the South Pacific

    The College of Forestry and Conservation at The University of Montana is offering students the opportunity to expand their knowledge and experience of natural ecosystems in the South Pacific. These field-based, experiential classes focus on the environmental and conservation concerns, as well as the modern and traditional cultures, of Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji. These are junior-level courses, suitable for all majors, with out-of-state students paying the same tuition levels as in-state students.

    22. National Sustainable Design Expo ~ Washington, DC

    23. Online Summer and Fall EETAP Courses Announced

    The Environmental Education and Training Partnership (EETAP) and the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point (UWSP) have announced these online courses for the 2008 summer and fall semesters. Three undergraduate or graduate credits are available, and all participants are eligible for the in-state tuition rate. The courses are also offered as a non-credit workshops for those who are not seeking college credit.

  • Applied Environmental Education Program Evaluation
    Summer 2008 course: June 2 – August 22
    Fall 2008 course: September 8 – December 5
    This 13-week online course is designed to assist environmental educators and natural resource professionals in evaluating their education programs. Participants have the opportunity to develop and apply skills in designing evaluation tools such as surveys, observation forms, and interview and focus group guides.

  • Fundamentals of Environmental Education
    Summer 2008 course: June 2 – August 15
    Fall 2008 course: September 8 – November 28
    12-week online course about the fundamentals of environmental education is appropriate for both classroom teachers and for non-formal educators who work with students and/or teachers. It provides educators with the knowledge and skills necessary to incorporate quality environmental education into their instruction. Participants discuss the history, definition, and goals of environmental education; develop an understanding of the professional roles and instructional methods of environmental educators; and interact with other educators from across the country.

    National Environmental Education Week, made possible by Canon USA, promotes understanding and protection of the natural world by actively engaging K-12th grade students and educators of all subjects in an inspired week of environmental learning and service before Earth Day.     EE Week 2008 will focus on a special Carbon Footprints theme. Participants will have access to a wide variety of FREE environmental education resources, including:

    National Parks Service program provides opportunities for teachers from schools with diverse student populations to have well-rounded work experiences in national parks.     27. Weyerhaeuser Teacher on Summer Assignment (TOSA) Program ~ North Carolina

    June 23 - August 1, 2008 ~ Various, North Carolina
    Application Deadline: April 21, 2008

    The TOSA program allows K-12 teachers to gain first-hand knowledge of environmental issues and experience real-world applications of concepts they teach in the classroom. The six-week paid assignments are conducted at various Weyerhaeuser timberlands and manufacturing facilities in eastern North Carolina. Teachers are required to do useful valued work, create a lesson, activity, and curriculum piece for their classroom. They need to work the full six-weeks of the program, attend all scheduled workshops, make a final presentation, and maintain a safe work experience. CEUs available.

    29. Engaging Science, Advancing Learning ~ CFP

    Associate of American Colleges & Universities (AAC&U) is accepting proposals for "Engaging Science, Advancing Learning: General Education, Majors, and the New Global Century," a Network for Academic Renewal conference to be held November 6-8, 2008, in Providence, Rhode Island. This conference will explore the place and practice of science in college learning for the twenty-first century. Participants will work on ways to accelerate hands-on learning in science, both in general education and in majors, especially reforms that put critical inquiry, undergraduate research, and social responsibility at the center of the educational experience.

    30. RFP for Conservation Education Scope and Sequence

    Proposals due: April 23, 2008
    The Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies is soliciting bids for a vendor to develop a Scope and Sequence of the Association’s Core Concepts for Conservation Education. The target audiences are GK-12 – students and teachers. The Concepts will need to be structured into three to four specific grade bands and the content areas of science, social studies, language arts/reading, applied math, and physical education/health.

    31. Rhubarb Magazine Seeks Submissions on Stewardship

    Deadline: June 15, 2008
    Rhubarb Magazine, published by the Mennonite Literary Society, is seeking submissions for an upcoming issue on the theme of Stewardship. Submissions can include fiction, poetry, prose, photographs, paintings, or other images, with an environmental focus. Written submissions must be 500-1500 words. Publication of Rhubarb Stewardship is planned for summer 2008. See Web site for guidelines.

    32. Technology use in Non-Formal EE ~ Survey

    Deadline: April 18, 2008
    Please participate in this short survey investigating the use of technology in nonformal environmental education efforts. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. The results will form a baseline to document the extent to which technology is currently being used and what factors influence technology use in nonformal environmental education. Survey to assist Ph.D. candidate in Learning Sciences and Technology at Lehigh University.

    33. Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE)

    The Center for the Advancement of the Steady State Economy (CASSE) provides a resources page with educational material on the trade-offs between economic growth and environmental protection, economic sustainability, and national security. The downloadable resources include articles, slideshows, videos, and more. CASSE is a nonprofit organization founded by Brian Czech, a Conservation Biologist in the federal government who also teaches Ecological Economics at Virginia Tech. CASSE’s Executive Director is Rob Dietz, who lectures on the subject and assists with related educational efforts.
