1. NAAEE Conference Scholarships Offered - Apply Now
NAAEE is pleased to announce the availability of the following scholarship opportunities for the 2008 conference:
Affordability Scholarship -- A limited number of Affordability Scholarships will be awarded to provide discounted full conference registration to NAAEE members who have lower incomes and little or no financial support from their employer. (Students and retirees are not eligible.) Deadline: June 15, 2008Diversity Scholarship -- Diversity is a key element of NAAEEs formal Strategic Plan to enrich the field of environmental education. Diversity scholarships are an opportunity to promote interaction and exchange within a wide variety of cultures and perspectives. Deadline: June 15, 2008The William B. Stapp College Student Scholarship -- The Stapp Fund was established in 2001 in honor of NAAEE international leader Dr. Bill Stapp (1930-2001) to help students from around the world attend NAAEE's annual conference. 2. Adopt the Guidelines
How can your organization promote quality environmental education? The answer is, Adopt the Guidelines!
NAAEE and the National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education are encouraging stakeholder groups to adopt the Guidelines and apply them to their work. By adopting the Guidelines, your organization will help to develop awareness of the National Project for Excellence in Environmental Education, improve the quality of environmental education practice, and build credibility for the field. 3. Earn your EE Resource Reviews Recognition!
Educators hungry for high quality environmental education resources may be looking for just what you provide. But how can they find your materials? One answer is through NAAEE's online EE Resource Directory. Plan to sign up for the EE Resource Reviews workshop at the 2008 NAAEE conference in Wichita. You'll learn to use the Guidelines for Excellence to assess your materials. Then choose between two options: bring your own resource and start your online self-review (computers and guidance provided, review submission fees waived), or train and join the national team of peer reviewers so you can provide valuable feedback to others. Registration opens June 2!

7. Walk with Wildlife in the Middle of Wichita
The Great Plains Nature Center provides attendees of the 2008 NAAEE Annual Conference the opportunity to learn about the grasslands, wetlands, and woodlands indigenous to the Great Plains. 8. Classroom Earth National High School Challenge

To help provide teachers around the country with support for their innovative work to bring EE into the classroom, the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF) is launching this opportunity for up to 25 teachers to secure as much as $5,000 to $10,000 in funding to bring innovative environmental themes into their coursework.

10. Envision2050: Is the Future Nature?
Deadline: May 15th, 2008
Urban Re:Vision is holding a national poster competition intended to engage students in the national dialogue surrounding environmental issues. Envision2050: Is the Future Nature? asks students grades 6-12 to imagine their world in the year 2050 and present their ideas in the form of a poster. A variety of prizes will be awarded including four, 30-day scholarships to The National Outdoor Leadership School in Wyoming and public showings at the Sony Wonder Technology Lab.

11. Greening Canada's Schoolgrounds
Tree Canada facilitates funding from environmentally-conscious companies, such as Shell Canada, GAP, Telus, and Home Hardware, for the Greening Canada's Schoolgrounds program. Selected schools receive educational information, technical advice, and financial support up to $5,000 towards the transformation of their school grounds into environmentally enriched learning landscapes.

15. Two New Publications on the Environment and Human Health
The National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) is offering pdf versions of two publications from the 2007 National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment: Integrating Environment and Human Health. The first report, Integrating Environment and Human Health, discusses the connection between human health and the health of the planet. The second publication Climate, Poverty and Health: Time for Preventive Medicine, describes the negative impacts of climate change on human health and how poverty exacerbates the impacts.

16. Accredited Teacher Trainings and Field Seminars ~ Alaska
Explore Alaskas legendary natural and cultural heritage with Alaska Geographic Institute. Accredited teacher trainings and field seminars are hands-on experiences set in remote locations throughout Alaska. Courses in 2008 include Recovering the Sound: After the Exxon Valdez, Bears and Wilderness of Admiralty Island, and World of Wolves. All courses are offered in partnership with Alaskas national parks, forests, and refuges.

18. Ecological Field Studies ~ Online
May 27 - July 6, 2008 ~ Online
The Environmental Science Education: Summer Ecological Field Studies (EDCI 580-02) course is designed for educators of children in grades 6-12 to learn and practice basic ecological field techniques and integrate them into their instruction. This course focuses on summer field ecological studies including stream, forest, plant, and bird studies. All studies will be completed outdoors in your local environment. A wide variety of field study techniques will be presented and the participants will share the results of the studies. Basic ecological concepts will be presented in the context of the field studies. Participants will have many opportunities to share their views on a variety of topics related to the environment and education. This course is a great opportunity to meet and interact with educators whose work focuses on ecology and young people. Three graduate credits available.

19. Growing Greener School Grounds Conference ~ California
October 10-11, 2008 ~ San Francisco, California
This 3rd San Francisco Green Schoolyard Alliance Growing Greener School Grounds Conference aims to bring together over 300 K-12 teachers and community members from San Francisco, the greater Bay Area, and beyond to learn more about creating and sustaining vibrant outdoor learning environments. The conference begins with a resource fair and keynote address, and the following day attendees will attend full or half day workshops such as: designing, building, and maintaining school gardens, attracting wildlife to school grounds, building and using renewable energy systems at schools, tracking water use on school grounds, reducing waste, building schoolyard artwork, cooking with garden produce, green schoolyards and children's health and nutrition, and many other topics. Many of the workshops will also focus on ways to connect outdoor classrooms to the state curriculum framework.

20. Hands-on Astronomy Education ~ Missouri

Prepare for the 2009 International Year of Astronomy (IYA) by attending a weekend of workshops on presenting astronomy to the public. The program will be held before the meeting of the American Astronomical Society, which this year includes an IYA symposium from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. 22. SEPUP Opportunities for Teachers
Opportunity #1
The Science Education for Public Understanding Program (SEPUP) is seeking teachers to validate Ecology and Cell tests. All that is required is to give the test to students and return answer sheets to SEPUP. The tests are 40-50 questions, a mix of multiple choice and short answer, and are all directly from, or based on test questions from national test bank sources. Each test is designed to take one class period. Seeking test results by mid-June. Funding and grant restrictions prohibit pay for this help, but a small gift certificate to Amazon.com is offered as a thank you.

SEPUP is accepting applications for field test centers to participate in the national field test of our new course "Science in Global Issues" for the 2008-2009 school year. The development of this National Science Foundation funded curriculum is utilizing a process of backward design to develop four biology units and an accompanying introductory unit on sustainability. The process will begin with an all expense paid trip to the summer conference, July 28 August 1, 2008, for professional development to prepare for field testing.

23. Watershed Dynamics Teacher Workshop ~ Colorado

The GLOBE Program Office and Watershed Dynamics ESSP are offering this professional development opportunity for teachers introducing the second curriculum module on watershed dynamics and the inter-relationship between landcover and stream flow. 24. Adventures with Jonny
Adventures with Jonny is a very unique outdoor children's series that combines three books into one. The book opens with a colorfully illustrated, rhyming children's story to pique the child's interest in the sport of fishing. The second section is a parental tutorial to aid parents in the proper introduction of their children to the sport. The book concludes with a fish identification game and a writing journal so that kids may record their early fishing adventures. Jimmy Kimmel Live is looking for a knowledgeable science teacher who would feel comfortable taking Jimmy through multiple unusual and entertaining science experiments for a potential new segment on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Ideally, if the right personality for the segment is found, this could be a recurring bit. Interested?
