Learning Communities for Sustainability: Case Studies in the U.S.

Winter 2006 Communicator "Extra"

Presenters in this Friday morning symposium shared experiences from local programs that attempt to build sustainable communities through collaboration among various partner organizations and agencies. For example, Shelburne Farms’ Sustainable Schools Project works with the University of Vermont faculty and students to “improve the quality of life now and into the future” in and around Burlington. Northland College in Wisconsin is working with several communities around Chequamegon Bay to create an “eco-municipality.” There were several common lessons among all of these examples, including the importance of planning and committing to a long-term collaborative process.
