2005 Award for Outstanding Service to EE

Individual-Local Level: Tanya M. Oznowich

For the past twenty years, Tanya has been known throughout New Jersey, and in many national venues, for her visible contributions to EE and her dedicated service in the field of EE. In 1984, Tanya worked with other educators who had the goal of coordinating and networking environmental education in the state, and together they formed the Alliance for New Jersey Environmental Education-ANJEE." Tanya has served in almost every leadership position within the organization and is the only individual to serve continuously on either Executive Board or Advisory Council throughout the life of ANJEE.

Tanya's ANJEE service represents only one part of her EE leadership. In 1988, she was hired by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) to oversee environmental education. As a member of NJDEP's Communications staff she is involved with EE curriculum, project and program development, special events, EE promotions, and training and instruction. For the past seventeen years, Tanya's efforts have created or improved environmental education in schools and in nonformal education programs throughout New Jersey.. She has also served on the National Environmental Education Advisory Council, the State Education and Environment Roundtable, and numerous advisory and work committees led by the New Jersey Department of Education. Tanya's efforts helped create the New Jersey Commission on Environmental Education (NJCEE), first as a temporary entity, by Executive Order, and finally, as a permanent commission in but not of NJDEP, through the Environmental Education Act (January 8, 1996), legislation which recognized environmental education as a critical component of New Jersey's curriculum.
