2005 Award for Outstanding Service to EE

Individual - Global Level Tiahoga Ruge

Ms. Ruge has developed and advanced environmental education through communication technologies of various sorts. Ms. Ruge has produced and directed numerous films and documentaries on social and environmental issues including a five-part series on the Biosphere 2 project and has used these mediums to link the governmental and non-governmental realms at both the national and global level, a feat that has proved beneficial for environmental education in the Americas.


Ms. Tiahoga Ruge has a special gift for establishing collaborations between numerous stakeholders and has worked several years promoting an EE Mexico-USA exchange. Her participation as a member of the steering committee of UNEP's Global Environmental Citizenship Program for the America is promoting EE throughout Latin America. Her extensive resume includes being founder and director of the North American Centre for Environmental Information and Communication (CICEANA), Counsellor for Science and Culture for the Embassy of Mexico in India, recipient of the UNEP Global 500 Roll of Honour Award in 1991, Counsellor for the Global Forum for Latin America and the Caribbean, founder of a network for sustainable communities linked by e-commerce, and member of the Latin American Communication Network for the Environment TVE-UNEP. Furthermore, Ms. Ruge has extensive international experience in various global symposia and Sustainable Development Summits (2002, 2003). Currently, she is promoting and coordinating the development of EE strategies in each of the Mexican States and working very intensely to promote coordination and development of EE programs, projects and activities in the Mexico-USA border
