Sierra Youth Coalition (the youth-run branch of the Sierra Club of Canada)
The Sierra Youth Coalition (SYC) works with Canadian youth and students between the ages of 14 and 25. They run a number of programs including the Sustainable Campus Project, Academia to Action, Youth Action Gatherings, Environmental Awareness Campaigns and Internships. "The Sustainable Campuses project aims to support, document and spread the efforts of Canadian post-secondary students at creating and implementing sustainable initiatives for their educational institutions. This is the only Canadian network of post-secondary students, which has over 50 campuses participating and collaborating in their efforts at "campus greening". In this project SYC means to move beyond double-sided features in photocopiers, beyond recycling pop cans, to consider the ecological impacts of all aspects of the post-secondary setting. The Sustainable Campuses project calls for a paradigm shift, to integrate sustainable practices into the core of educational institutions. Past areas/issues of focus have included campus auditing, environmental policies, environmental management systems, sustainable transportation, energy and water efficiency practices on campus, environmental education, ethical investment practices, the corporate influence on campus, deriving a set of sustainable indicators, etc."
In 2004, the Sierra Youth Coalition launched a program that sought to evolve campus sustainability to the next level. This project is called from Academia to Action. Through experiential learning, students on over 30 campuses across the country, guided by the Sierra Youth Coalition's remarkable youth staff, are working to build campus based multi-stakeholder groups to assess, guide, direct and implement long term programs for major campus bases environmental and sustainability improvements. In addition, many campus are taking Energy Based initiatives such as greenhouse gas inventories and reductions. SYC has had a tremendous influence on Canadian campuses, both in education for environmental but also in creating working solutions that demonstrate ecological initiatives.
