2001 Outstanding Service to Environmental Education at the Regional Level
Four Corners School of Outdoor Education, Monticello, Utah
For the last 17 years Four Corners School of Outdoor Education (FCS), in Monticello, Utah, has collaborated with schools, museums, state and federal agencies, and environmental organizations to educate people about the need to protect the spectacular wild places of the Colorado Plateau. FCS achieves its mission through four inter-related programs. The Bioregional Outdoor Education Project uses teacher training and school-based Science Resource Centers to create sustainable, interdisciplinary, bioregional, environmental education programs in all 96 school districts in the Colorado Plateau bioregion (parts of Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico). The Canyon Country Youth Corps is a service-based employment program for youth, primarily Native Americans, ages 16-23. The year-round program involves public lands restoration projects combined with an educational component that focuses on life and job skills, cultural resource protection, and environmental stewardship. Southwest Ed-Ventures is a series of accredited field seminars offered in cooperation with agencies such as the Denver Museum of Natural History, Sierra Club, Smithsonian, National Geographic Society, the Wilderness Society, and others. Finally, the Eco-Educator Project is a new initiative to train professional guides, outfitters, and university outdoor program directors to better educate their clients and students about environmental issues and inspire them to become advocates for environmental protection.
