An exercise to learn more about disparities
The assessment section presents an example of white privilege. This exercise provides you with some of the many obstacles faced by other groups. These obstacles occur in everything from education, to income, health, criminal justice, and the overall ability to move ahead. The link below will take you to tolerance.org, an Internet activity of the Southern Poverty Law Center. The activity is called Racial Disparities: Jigsaw mini-unit.
The activity looks at school segregation; the achievement gap; income gap; health care disparities; and the criminal justice system (disproportionate minority confinement) and examines racial disparities topics along five lines of inquiry:
- What is the nature and scope of the disparity or problem?
- What impact does it have on African American communities?
- What historic and present-day factors help create the problem?
- What can individuals do to help address the problem?
- What changes does society need to make to help relieve the disparity?
