Resource Review milestones and sponsor appreciation

Dawn of the century (2000)

The national EE Materials Review program began with support from the Environmental Education and Training Partnership (EETAP), funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. As the national program continued to gel and a needs assessment was conducted, the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE) began developing a state-level online resource review program built on the online database system that NAAEE created for our Affiliate associations and other organizations.

May 2004

The NAAEE Board officially voted to create a Materials Review Advisory Council (MRAC), recognizing the work that many volunteers had already done to develop a sustainable and rigorous national process for reviewing EE materials. Notably, the decision to form the MRAC was the result of the work of an EE Quality Assurance (EEQA) Committee, led by NAAEE Affiliates, which recommended two oversight bodies within the broader EEQA initiative: one for EE materials review and the other for an EE Certification program.

July 2004

NAAEE staff and MRAC Chair Lori Mann visited Denver, CO, to better understand CAEE's system and to identify the issues that need to be resolved to create a national equivalent. NAAEE's Technology Solutions program (NTS) then helped to build a national online resource review system that is integrated with CAEE's existing online state EE directory.

January 2005

The MRAC met in Washington, DC, to make key decisions on the fundamental components of a nationwide resource review process. The MRAC decided to use the term "resources," rather than "materials" to include programs or presentations that have a written scope and sequence. Due to the high cost that would be involved, the MRAC decided that no site visits would be conducted as part of the review process.

Fall 2005

Trainings were begun to show NAAEE members how to enter their resource listings into the National EE Directory, complete an online submission indicating the intent and purpose of the resource with reference to the EE Materials Guidelines, and request an NAAEE review to be included in the Directory.

Fall 2005

The first resources were reviewed under the new system and entered into an online National EE Directory developed by NAAEE as part of the EE-Link database.

Spring 2006

The MRAC officially was renamed the Resource Reviews Advisory Council (RRAC) to reflect the broader scope of the items to be included for review in the program.

NAAEE gratefully acknowledges the Environmental Education and Training Partnership (EETAP) for its continuing financial support to develop this program.
